Students at West Launceston Primary School in Tasmania learnt how to reduce food waste and eat healthier with a visit from OzHarvest Tasmania FEAST Program Coordinator Hollie Kempton and Tasmanian Minister for Education, Jo Palmer on Monday, May 27.
“It was wonderful to visit West Launceston Primary to engage with students as they participated in the OzHarvest FEAST Program,” Minister Palmer said. “Ensuring our children have access to fresh, nutritious food was critical, and that’s exactly what the Tasmanian Government was delivering through its 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.”
School programs, such as FEAST, develop student understanding of health literacy and sustainability through interactive, curriculum aligned programs.
11-year-old student Helena Tan said food waste contributes to greenhouse gases. “When food gets thrown out it goes to waste where it burns up, causing greenhouse gases, called methane,” Helena said. ‘The more gases we have in the atmosphere the more earth warms up which can lead to things like extinction.”
FEAST is the essential ingredient for any school putting the planet first and inspiring the next generation to become future change-makers. Hollie Kempton, OzHarvest Tasmania FEAST Program Coordinator said OzHarvest is so grateful to be launching our free program to all schools across Tasmania.
Through the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s future, the Tasmanian Government will continue to help to build health literacy and nutrition awareness for children and families in Tasmania. We look forward to continuing to work with the Tasmania government in achieving this goal.
